Sustainability

What is Riso printing?

Riso printing is more ecofriendly than your typical inkjet printing options. It was originally created as a copy machine to help make education materials more accessible. It uses less energy and uses soy based inks which are much better for the environment! It also uses materials made out of rice paper.

It prints one color at a time, which means we can get significantly more vibrant colors from the ink! This also means you can expect differences in how the colors line up which makes each print truly unique. I even hand sign and mark which edition you’ll be receiving!

What recycled paper do you use?

At durianne art, I deeply care about being environmentally friendly. This goes for the paper I use for my prints, zines, memo pads, and even my enamel pin backing cards too! I’m proud to use French Paper, a leading eco-friendly, hydroelectric paper mill. Using a US-based company that sources from North American materials provides the lowest environmental impact. I like this paper not only because of how sustainable it is, but also because it allows printed colors to remain nice and vibrant on my prints and zines and also holds ink well for my memo pads.

Can I recycle/reuse your packaging?

Please read the labels on the mailers you receive to see if they are recyclable or reusable. As a small business, I purchase reusable or recyclable mailers, but I also sometimes use mailers from creative reuse stores. I believe using materials that would have been otherwise thrown away and supporting reuse spaces fits into the sustainability practices I have envisioned for durianne art.

My prints and enamel pins are currently packaged in cellophane, which is not curbside recyclable. When my current stock runs out I am going to look into more sustainable alternatives. I also occasionally use bubble wrap and plastic bags that cannot be recycled.

Product Information

Why do my acrylic charms look scuffed or damaged?

To keep the product protected before getting to you, there is a protective layer of clear film on both sides of the charm that is easily peeled off!

Are the stickers waterproof?

Yes! Most stickers are vinyl, waterproof, and 2-4 year weatherproof. Placing the stickers in a washing machine may impact this, so please apply at your own discretion.

What's the difference between your notebooks and sketchbooks?

My sketchbooks and notebooks all include a back pocket, ribbon bookmark, and elastic band for closure. Please check the listing for dimensions and paper details before purchasing.

My notebooks use A5 sized dot paper. These are great for everyday journaling and notes. This paper is NOT bleed proof and darker inks or pens with heavy flow might have some feathering. Gel pens/regular pens are perfectly fine on this paper. For fountain pens, I use the Pilot Kakuno with Pilot Iroshizuku, Wearingeul, Sailor, and Tono & Lims fountain pen inks and have found there is minimal bleed and feathering even for dark colors. Results may vary depending on pen and ink used.

My sketchbooks use either Coated or Textured paper.

The coated paper has a coating on top that prevents ink from bleeding through. Alcohol markers, fountain pens, gouache, wet media, and other inks are handled very well. I recommend giving time for the medium to dry before closing or flipping the page. Coated paper has a different “feel” to it and may take some time getting used to for mediums like pencil.

The textured paper is very thick and while it has minimal bleeding it is NOT bleed-proof like the coated paper is. There should be no major issues using wet or dry mediums as long as bleed is expected.

The visual distinction is that the textured sketchbooks are thicker. Please take a look at my Sketchbook Zines to see the sketchbooks in action.
